Oil fate and mass balance for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill
نویسندگان
چکیده
Based on oil fate modeling of the Deepwater Horizon spill through August 2010, during June and July ~89% surfaced, ~5% entered (by dissolving or as microdroplets) deep plume (>900 m), ~6% dissolved biodegraded between 900 m 40 m. Subsea dispersant application reduced surfacing by ~7% evaporation volatiles ~26%. By 2011, total oil, ~41% evaporated, ~15% was ashore in nearshore (<10 m) sediments, ~3% removed responders, ~38.4% water column (partially degraded; 29% shallower 9.4% deeper than ~2.6% sedimented waters >10 (including 1.5% after 2010). Volatile soluble fractions that did not evaporate end leaving residual to disperse potentially settle. Model estimates were validated comparison field observations floating atmospheric emissions.

Air quality implications of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
During the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill, a wide range of gas and aerosol species were measured from an aircraft around, downwind, and away from the DWH site. Additional hydrocarbon measurements were made from ships in the vicinity. Aerosol particles of respirable sizes were on occasions a significant air quality issue for populated areas along the Gulf Coast. Yields of organic aerosol part...
متن کاملThresholds in marsh resilience to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill
Ecosystem boundary retreat due to human-induced pressure is a generally observed phenomenon. However, studies that document thresholds beyond which internal resistance mechanisms are overwhelmed are uncommon. Following the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill, field studies from a few sites suggested that oiling of salt marshes could lead to a biogeomorphic feedback where plant death resulted in i...
متن کاملOrganic aerosol formation downwind from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
A large fraction of atmospheric aerosols are derived from organic compounds with various volatilities. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) WP-3D research aircraft made airborne measurements of the gaseous and aerosol composition of air over the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that occurred from April to August 2010. A narrow plume of hydrocarbons was...
متن کاملFederal seafood safety response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, petroleum-related compounds and chemical dispersants were detected in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. As a result, there was concern about the risk to human health through consumption of contaminated seafood in the region. Federal and Gulf Coast State agencies worked together on a sampling plan and analytical protocols to determine whether seafo...
متن کاملComposition and fate of gas and oil released to the water column during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Quantitative information regarding the endmember composition of the gas and oil that flowed from the Macondo well during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill is essential for determining the oil flow rate, total oil volume released, and trajectories and fates of hydrocarbon components in the marine environment. Using isobaric gas-tight samplers, we collected discrete samples directly above the Macon...
